Dr Paul Lawler MA, FRCP, FRCA

From 2003- 2005, Dr Lawler held the post of Medical Director at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust, which includes the James Cook University Hospital, one of the largest Private Finance Initiative projects of its type in Europe. He served in total for 26-years with the Trust and its predecessor organisations, during which he was successively Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine and Clinical Director of Intensive Care Services.

In a distinguished 35-year career, Dr Lawler has also made many significant contributions to national and international medicine. In his capacities as President of the Intensive Care Society, Member of the Council of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and Chairman of the Intercollegiate Board, he has taken part in numerous national and regional governance investigations.

In additional to multiple papers in peer reviewed journals, his extensive portfolio of published work includes the standard work on designing, equipping and running an intensive care unit; the main guidance manual on the transfer of critically ill patients; and the drafting of the whole syllabus for Diploma of Intensive Care Medicine.

He has lectured extensively in the UK and abroad and served as a PhD examiner for the University of Manchester. For 12 years he examined for FRCA and has acted as an international external examiner in anaesthesia in Kuwait, Eire and Sri Lanka. He was the first Chairman of the Examiners for the Diploma of Intensive Care Medicine.

Maurice Hawthorne FRCS

Maurice Hawthorne has been a Consultant ENT Surgeon since 1988 at South Tees Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. He has been a postgraduate examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England since 1989 and numbers among his other examinerships those of the GMC, The Hearing Aid Council, The Intercollegiate Specialty Boards in Surgery and various Universities. He has a track record of more than ten years in assessment and examine development, having worked on the creation of the MRCS, and DOHNS examinations. More recently he has been developing assessment tools for use by the Intercollegiate Specialty Boards for the examinations which are sat by final year trainees just before they become Consultants.

In the field of fitness to practice Mr Hawthorne is a performance assessor for the GMC and has also undertaken work for The New Zealand Medical Council and the South African Medical Council.

Mr Hawthorne is no stranger to work in industry as well having undertaken consultancy work for London Underground, English Welsh and Scottish Railways, Elementis Chromium and in the military for the Egyptian, Indian and Jordanian Armies.

Mr Hawthone's judicial training has been provided by the Judicial Studies Board and he works regularly in a judicial capacity for The Appeals Service and The Police Pensions Authority."

Richard Tunnicliffe BA (Hons) ACII

Richard Tunnicliffe is a specialist in insurance regulation and risk management, including performance and corporate governance issues. He is an associate of the Chartered Institute of Insurers and a Chartered Insurance Practitioner.

Richard gained 15 years experience of the insurance industry with Lloyds of London before resigning in April 2004 to set up Iodem Solutions Limited with fellow Iodem Health Director, Janet Hawthorne. Iodem Solutions provides risk management, corporate governance and regulatory compliance services for a range of clients, in the financial services industry.

Janet Hawthorne LLB (Hons)

Janet Hawthorne is an experienced Regulatory Lawyer, who has specialised in risk management , insurance and medical regulation. She has represented plaintiffs and defendants in civil and criminal medical litigation and has investigated and prepared cases for hearing before the Conduct committee of the General Medical Council.

From January 2001 to April 2004, she headed up the Investigations Department of Lloyds of London, which included leading prosecutions into misconduct by brokers and underwriters together with investigating poor performance by individuals and corporate entities in the Lloyds Market. In 2004, she set up Iodem Solutions with Richard Tunnicliffe.
